| The Mass for Chrism takes its name from Christ. This Mass is properly celebrated by the Bishop with all his clergy. It is a sign of the unity and communion of the priests with their Bishop. Traditionally celebrated on Holy Thursday morning it may take place earlier in Holy Week, if priests must travel far from their parishes to participate.
During the Chrism Mass the Bishop blesses the holy oils. There is the oil for the anointing of the sick, the oil for Catechumens and the oil of Chrism. These oils are then distributed to all the parishes in the diocese for the observance of the Sacraments.
The old oils are burnt or poured into Sanctuary lamps that burn before the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.
